Technical

Introduced by Sony in 1992, the MiniDisc was a compact and portable magneto-optical data storage device that was mainly used to record, store and play back audio files. Eventually reaching a capacity of 80 minutes of digitized audio or 1 gigabyte of data, the MiniDisc was developed to be used with portable listening devices. A MiniDisc was recorded on, and erased, by using a laser and a magnetic head. The laser altered the magnetic coercivity to erase previous data, allowing the magnetic head to impart a new bit pattern through positive or negative polarization. MiniDisc technology employed digital compression to reduce storage requirements by a factor of 5 to 1.While MiniDiscs were popular in Japan, they had restricted uptake in Canada where they were mostly limited to specific professional applications like journalism. Intended as a mainstream replacement for compact analogue magnetic cassettes and Compact Disks, the MiniDisc’s high cost was ultimately unable to compete with magnetic cassettes, CDs, MP3s, DVDs and flash drives. Sony ceased production of MiniDiscs in 2011, and the last MiniDisc players were sold in 2013. Two plastic wrapped, sealed, recordable mini disks sealed in a cardboard and plastic wrapper. Discks are sealed in blue plastic. Cardboard wrapper isblue and black with white print. Deux minidisques enveloppés en plastique scellé dans une boîte en carton et du plastique. Les disques sont scellés en plastique bleu. L'emballage en carton est bleu et noir avec l'écriture blanche.
