This frame showcases the solar cells developed by Lockheed Martin at its Space Systems facility in Sunnyvale, California, which have generated electrical power for the International Space Station since 2000. Marc Garneau was gifted this frame by Lockheed in recognition of the role he and his crewmates played in the delivery, assembly and activation of the American electrical power system aboard the ISS. (Ref 1) Garneau was the only Canadian on STS-97 and operated the Canadian designed and built Canadian designed and built Canadarm to remove the P6 Intergrated Truss from the Shuttle's cargo bay to prepare it for installation. (Ref 2) At the time, it was the largest element to be delivered to the Station aboard a Shuttle making the precise and masterful use of Canadarm critical to the success of the mission.
Function
A commemorative example of the solar panel cells built for the International Space Station by Lockheed Martin. Un exemple commémoratif d'un panneau solaire bâti pour la Station spatiale internationale par Lockheed Martin.
Technical
While this object is commemorative, it represents the impressive solar panel technology developed by Lockheed in the late 1990s and early 2000s that has kept the International Space Station in operation since 2000. The final assembly of the ISS features eight wings of solar panels which are themselves made up of a mast and two solar array blankets. Each of these blankets comprises 84 panels and all but two are populated with 200 solar cells each. The cells were at the time, the heart of the most powerful arrays every launched into orbit. After over 20 years of operation, the solar arrays have begun to degrade as anticipated. New roll-out solar panels are being installed to generate more power for Station operations.
