- Coal mine workings, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. In some of the mines pit ponies are used for hauling the coal while in others use is made of electric traction. There are huge deposits of coal in Cape Breton Island with the largest underwater workings in the world, one mine extending out under the Atlantic about two miles.
