- Braiding the Arrow Sash - In olden days, the making of the "ceinture fléchée", a sash worn by men and always following a conventional arrow pattern, was a rural art. Modernization, streamlining and new fashions cast the sash into the discard despite the comfort it provided on a cold winter's day. There is a now a resurgence of former domestic craft in the Province of Quebec and the gifted nimble fingers illustrated are those of Cécile Barot of Montreal, a city dweller who is self-taught in the art of her grandmother. It is a real art and the making of a skillfully braided sash requires time and care. An expert weaver requires at least 20 minutes to braid a square inch. The sashes vary in length from 45 to 60 inches from three to six inches in width so that a large sash requires about 120 hours of hand work.
