- Wood carving is Quebec's ART - Thrown on their own resources, the first settlers in what is now the Province of Quebec soon discovered the value of Canadian hardwoods for the embellishment of their churches and homes. Many fine specimens of work carried out by early artists and artisans yet remain in Quebec and the present generation of wood carvers has produced excellent examples. In the photograph is shown Miss Harrier Cuttle, of Quebec City, engaged in the early stages of what is intended to be a statue of St. John de Baptist, patron saint of Canadians of the French language. Miss Cuttle has European training in addition to her Canadian background.
