- Malagash Salt Mine - Nova Scotia. Canada's biggest salt mine, largest in the British Empire, goes all out in a spectacular war effort. This deposit, more than 100 miles long and 400 feet wide is the largest in the northern hemisphere. It is snow white and 98.5% pure, contains more potash, another vital war chemical than any other salt mine in the world save Stassfurt, Germany. The salt here is 27,000,000 year old, one million years before the age of coal, that was worked for salt many years ago. These miners are doing a little Alpine climbing, inspecting the area for installation of a new salt mining system to reclaim more salt, as only the "cream" has been mined here.
