- Malagash Salt Mine, Nova Scotia. Canada's biggest salt mine, largest in the British Empire, goes all out in a spectacular war effort. This deposit, more than 100 miles long and 400 feet wide is the largest in northern hemisphere. It is snow white and 98.5% pure, contains more potash, another vital war chemical, than any other salt mine in the world save Stassfurt, Germany. The salt brought up from the mine shaft is checked for impurities, large stones are broken and then it goes into the crusher.
