- Sardine fishing off the New Brunswick coast, near Pennfield and Black's Harbour, in the Bay of Fundy. The fish are caught in huge heart-shaped weirs when the tide ebbs, then the men line the inside perimeter of the weir with a purse net, and the bottom is drawn together. When the large net is tightened into a small area, small hand nets and dip nets ladle the fish into dories until they are gunwale deep. The dories then deliver their loads to trawlers waiting outside the weir, where the fish are packed down between layers of ice and taken to the canneries. The weirs are usually owned and operated by several partners to each, and one weir sometimes fills as many as four trawlers.
