- The role of the fireman in the modern diesel engine is a contrast to the old days of the laborious job of hand-firing or shovelling of tons of coal into a greedy fire-box. Here Fireman Ed Foster checks the level of the lubricating oil in the diesel engine back of the cab of the diesel-electric locomotive. The diesel motor drives an electric generator. The electricity from the generator in turn operates an electric motor on each set of trucks on the engine. Usually two separate diesel-electric units are operated together the "A" unit with a cab and the "B" unit as a booster working in tandem. The fireman makes an inspection of the units and an electrical panel at intervals during the run, a passageway runs from the cab alongside the motors and generators.
