Here Brakeman E.N. Montgomery looks down the long row of box cars from his lookout in the cupola of the caboose. Constant examination of the train while it is moving is part of the vigil of the brakeman. He also watches passing trains for defect but usually he waves a highball to the van crew letting them know all is well on their train.
