Emile Berliner moved his corporate headquarters to Canada in 1899, opening a store and factory in Montreal. To sell his gramophones and records, Berliner introduce the “His Master’s Voice” logo featuring Nipper the dog looking into, and listening to, a gramophone horn. Used on products, memorabilia and in advertisement campaigns, in Canada and abroad, the logo would become one of the most iconic trademarks in music history.
Function
TO ADVERTISE THE RCA VICTOR TALKING MACHINE CO. Nipper the dog, in various configurations, has been used to advertise products manufactured and sold successively by Berliner Gramophone, Victor Talking Machine Co., and RCA.
Technical
Nipper the dog, and his gramophone, has been use as an advertising tool successively by Berliner Gramophone, Victor Talking Machine Co., and RCA, since 1899. Originally painted by Francis Barraud, the image of Nipper looking into the gramophone’s horn, along with the slogan “His Master’s Voice”, illustrated the quality of the products and the faithfulness of the sounds they purportedly produced. This example of Nipper, made of molded plastic, would have been used to advertise products made and sold by these companies.
