Used to orientate patient's placement and positioning in preparation for procedure, and provides spatial frame-of-reference for completed image. Use of lead strips helped limit x-ray penetration. Later flat-grid design permitted greater latitude in positioning of X-ray tube, and uniformly clear definition to extreme edges of X-ray film. [Refs. 1 & 2] - Area Notes
