Function

To separate waste matter & water from the blood by circulating them through a series of filters. These wastes are then eliminated from the body as urine.

Technical

Now used as temporary or stop-gap measure in treating patients suffering from kidney failure. Until 1958, when the first successful kidney transplant operation was performed, patients spent several hours connected to such a machine in hospital or on out-patient basis: treatment might be conducted 2-3 times per week or more.
