Technique: Variation on various floating bubble apparatus used to determine the properties of liquids (in this case water). "Galilean thermometer" with floating bubbles uses a similar principle, but with bubbles weighted to respond to slightly different temperatures. Technology related to hydrostatic bubbles & various hydrometers.
