Technique

Switchboard voltmeter measuring up to 300 volts. Constructed on d'Arsonval principle. Has a translucent, illuminated dial lit from behind by two lamps. The very large scale and the illumination of the dial allow this meter to be read from far away and under poor lighting conditions. The pointer is perforated, and the white space in its centre is very visible. The normal index, a moving black dot controlled by a knob on the face, indicates the usual reading of the meter. When the pointer is on this value, the dot covers the space and the pointer appears to be solid black. Thus seeing the white dot indicates that the circuit is under unusual conditions.
