Fonction: Harrows are used after plowing to prepare fields for seeding. Harrows break up clods of soil to create a smooth seed-bed. The disc harrow was first developed in the 1880s & is substantially the same today although much bigger & better engineered. Because it turns as it works, the disc is somewhat lighter of draft for the work it does (ref.2, p.36).
Technique: The rolling action of the disc harrow enables it to pulverize and loosen the soil under a variety of conditions. It is excellent for reducing plowed ground that is soddy or to prepare hard & dry soils for plowing. It may also be used to destroy weeds that have grown beyond the capability of the smoothing harrow (ref.1, p.83).
