AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY HOME SEWING OF GARMENTS, HOUSEHOLD LINENS, ETC. WAS BOTH THE NORM AND A NECESSITY FOR MOST, AS THE READY-TO-WEAR CLOTHING INDUSTRY WAS STILL FAIRLY NEW (FOR WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S GARMENTS), AND EXPENSIVE. PAPER PATTERNS ALSO ALLOWED FOR THE MAKING OF CURRENT FASHIONS IN SMALLER CITIES & TOWNS WHERE SELECTION OF READY-MADE GARMENTS MIGHT BE LIMITED IN SYTLE, COLOUR, SIZE AND/OR PRICE.

Markings include the following: "The/ FRENCH ALPHABET/ SELF TAUGHT/ Drafting SYSTEM/ FOR CUTTING/ Ladies and Children's/ GARMENTS./ COPYRIGHTED BY/ J.H. CHOQUETTE,/ Fall River, Mass."; "MEASUREMENT./ measures are required for body of dress viz:-/ Bust measure, length of waist and waist measure./ Taken as indicated in engraving- must be taken/ loose or tight as desired. Hip measures, taken about/ 6 inches below the waist- must be taken loose."; " Entered according to Act of Congress, at Washington,/ D.C., 1889, ‘90 by J.H. CHOQUETTE. Infringments [sic] will be/ prosecuted to the full extent of the law."; " Directions for Using this Chart./ Each alphabet letter on this Chart represents a scale of numbers,/ and in each scale the number corresponding to measurement of the/ person must be dotted.
