Fonction: Used by physician to observe subject's eye at varying depths and magnifications.
Technique: Direct type hand -held instrument, with a battery powered light source and rotating disc of lenses permits observation of the eye at various depths and magnifications, and illumination of otherwise invisible tissues. Hundreds of designs exist, but 3 elements are essential: a source of illumination; a method of reflecting the light into the eye; and an optical means of correcting an unsharp image of the fundus. The ophthalmoscope was introduced in the 1850s, and quickly became a staple instrument of the optometrist.

Marques: "HAMBLIN 495/ [498 ?]" incised in instrument casing. "OFF" incised on one end of sliding control. "T. P. MORLEY" printed by hand on tape label applied to instrument back. "1998.10.1" printed by hand in white ink on lower edge of casing. All three adjustment discs bear markings.
Manque: Appears complete.
Fini: Flat black enamel finish applied to most external surfaces. Silver metal disc and collar on light source body tube; silver metal post on on/off control. Red, white and black markings on adjustable discs. Buff-colour adhesive tape label applied to back.
