Part of a collection of drawings, sketches and paintings produced by three generations of amateur artist members of the Johnson family: John (1768-1846); son William Arthur (1816- 1880); and grandson Arthur Jukes Johnson (1848-1921, son of William). C. 1836 John emigrated to Upper Canada, settling in the area now known as Port Maitland. William became a noted Anglican Minister and a prominent figure in the history of Weston, Ont.. He was the founder of Trinity College School in Weston: one of his favourite and most talented students was William Osler. Arthur was Toronto's first Chief Coroner, a post he held for 17 years. Much of this material was donated to the Museum of the Academy of Medicine by Arthur's widow (c. 1922) and by his brother James (c. 1925).

"Weston Decb 6, 1875" handwritten in pencil in upper left of illustration. Below, also handwritten in pencil is text "Any quantity of these forms./ sometimes the view reminds me of tongue Hyla ar. {?}/ Do. like the grey matter in the spiral [illegible]/ Do. connective tissue./ Do. like a knotty piece of oak. They seem to be nerves, but are not stained/ at all, probably cone tissue/ You must/ [continued on reverse] come to a conclusion for yourself./ I have them put up in every/ way & some stained with carmine./ These are in the essential oil,/ but will be ready tomorrow-/ the external surface of the thick/ papillose [?] part shows the [illegible]/ lines & granular dots- &- quite/ a large portion is simply grey &/ structureless. Either your stain/ is useless or no nerves? one or/ two spots are almost purple/ but the stain is general, not spe-/ cial. Will you come out, or/ what can I do for you? In some/ places I noticed a tisselated [?] epi/ thelium [?] like kidney". Handwritten in black ink [in a distinct style of handwriting], below: "In examining specimens do not be deceived/ by fine [?] rust of steel blades, fine linen [?] threads, very/ thin cork etc. etc.". Three small black ink illustrations, below, labelled "fine rust", "linen thread" and "cork". UHN catalogue no. "X80.5.20 b" printed by hand in pencil, in lower right corner.
