Technical

Lighting produced by an electric arc obtained with metallic sodium. The first sodium bulb was invented by Westinghouse in 1920. OSRAM improved the quality of the glass used in 1931, however Philips began commercial production in 1932. This bulb was made with new glass developed by Philips in 1955 that improved the resistance to sodium vapour. Previous to this, sodium bulbs discoloured quickly. This change was a great improvement, but the bulbs needed to be installed correctly in order to avoid the sodium travelling through the tube and depositing a mirrored finish on the inside, reducing light transmission. Light obtained was orange in colour, which was less harsh than white light. Éclairage produit par un arc électrique obtenu avec du sodium métallique. La première ampoule au sodium a été inventée par Westinghouse en 1920. OSRAM améliora la qualité du verre en 1931. Toutefois, la compagnie Philips en fit la production commerciale à compter de 1932. Cette ampoule est faite du nouveau verre mis au point par Philips en 1955 qui améliorait la résistance à la vapeur de sodium. Avant, les ampoules au sodium se ternissaient rapidement. Ce changement était une belle amélioration mais l’ampoule devait être installée correctement afin d’éviter que le sodium voyage dans le tube et ne forme une surface miroitante qui réduisait l’efficacité d’éclairage. L’éclairage obtenu de couleur orange, est moins difficile pour la vision que la lumière blanche.

Clear glass lamp bulb with drops of solidified silver-coloured metal inside and white printed text on the side and handwritten markings in black. The bulb is set with a white ceramic base with black printed markings and a white metal clip at the other end. Ampoule transparent avec des gouttelettes d'un métal de couleur argenté à l'intérieur et du texte imprimé en blanc sur le côté et du texte écrit en noir. L'ampoule a une base de céramique blanche avec du texte imprimé en noir.
