Kodak Canada was founded by Eastman Kodak in 1899 in a Toronto shop where employees cut sheet film and fitted lenses on cameras to support the growing potential for a photographic market in Canada. As Canadian interest in photography grew, the company expanded across the country throughout the 20th century to produce in all aspects of photography including still and movie cameras, film, x-ray film, photocopy paper, and photographic chemicals under many popular names including Brownie, Kodacolor, Carousel, and Supermatic.
Function
To record still images on photographic rollfilm.
Technical
Autographic feature introduced by Kodak in late 1914, and was available on several lines of cameras (McKeown, p 120). A folding rollfilm camera that produced 2½ X 4¼ inch images on 116 film using a meniscus achromatic fixed focus lens (Coe, 77). The Autographic Kodak Junior 1A appears with an aperture size of f/4 - f/128 using a ball bearing shutter. The Autographic Kodak Junior 1A "permitted a message to be written on the film between frames. The spool was wound with a layer of carbon paper between the film and the thin red backing paper. After taking a photograph, the user would open up the small door on the back of the camera and using the provided stylus inscribed a brief note" (Hoyt, http://www.clickondavid.com/index-62.html). Autographic feature introduced by Kodak in late 1914, and was available on several lines of camera (McKeown, p.120).
