-
Part of the Ontario Hydro collection donated to the Museum in 1992. - Function
-
Used to press or smooth textiles. A rubber tube or hose fed gas to the iron from a tap in the wall, or from a ceiling fixture. Gas irons can be identified by a longish pipe coming out of the rear of the iron and pointing up at an angle. This placement would keep the hose out of the way of the user. - Technical
-
Marked a technological innovation from the sad iron with detachable handle. The user no longer had to remain close to the hot stove in order to continuously press textiles; they had the mobility of a long rubber tube which eliminated the need to remain close to a heat source. - Area Notes
