- Period
- Used on the Canadair CL-44 / CC-106 Yukon during the 1960's.
- Canada
-
This weight and balance type style calculator was likely used by RCAF pilot Donald Gilchrist while training on and flying the CC-106 Yukon. Gilchrist served with the RCAF from 1950 to 1973 and training on the Yukon in 1967. The Canadair CL-44 / CC-106 Yukon was a Canadian turboprop transport and cargo aircraft operated by 437 Squadron and 412 Squadron during the 1960's. This weight and balance calculator was produced especially for the Yukon, as weight and balance calculators are unique to individual aircraft, with numbers and calculations adjusted for that specific aircraft. - Function
-
Used to determine the gross weight, fore, aft and centre of gravity of airplane depending on the load and loading condition to ensure that gross weight is not excessive and ensure controllability and stability of the airplane. - Technical
-
The circular slide rule style of this weight and balance calculator would allow users to quickly calculate the weight and centre of gravity while flying. Circular slide rules are also advantageous over traditional slide rules as the dimension of the tool is greatly reduced, allowing users to easily carry it in a pocket or on their person. Weight and balance calculators were useful on cargo planes because of varying fuel and cargo loads and distributions. - Area Notes
