This test maintenance equipment (TME) is part of the DMS-100 switching system produced by Northern Telecom (later Nortel Networks). A Canadian-based company, Northern Telecom/Nortel Networks was one of the most important manufacturers of telecommunications equipment in the world in the 1990s. This specific unit was used by Nortel Networks staff in Ottawa for testing and product development. (ref. 1)

Function

Provides fault alarm and test facilities as well as other maintenance functions for a digital telephone switching system.

Technical

This Test Maintenance Equipment (TME) consists of two peripheral modules for the DMS-100 digital switching system housed in a single frame. The first is an alarm crossconnect unit (AXU) , which notifies technical personnel of faults or failures in the network. The second is a Maintenance Trunk Module (MTM), which enables network personnel to test subscriber lines by transmitting a test signal from the central office. It can also be used to generate busy signals, transmit recorded announcements (e.g. "The number you have dialed is not in service."), tap phone lines, and transmit high voltages down a line to remedy shorts caused by condensation or frost. All controls, components, etc. labelled; most also bear bar coded decals. Dominant markings on unit front include "DMS 100", "C 02", and "nt/northern/ telecom". "AXU 000 COMR" printed in large text on 'control panel' mounted on upper front of console. "NT0X46AB REL 10", "MADE IN CANADA", and "TME 003" are prominantly marked on unit back.
