Purchased during the research on the domestic technology for the Love Leisure Laundry exhibit to show a modern example of an apple peeler that was still available on the Canadian market in the 1990s. - Function
-
Used to attach an apple peeler to a table or countertop. - Technical
-
An example of a very persistent technology that has basically existed in unchanged form since 1878, and is now marketed toward Amish community and toward customers who insist on using manual kitchen appliance to prepare traditional recipes. Lehman's products are also often purchased by people travelling to countries with limited access to power, for example by missionaries. Wooden apple peelers with metal blades were produced in America ca. 1750. Since 1849 cast iron replaced wood as the main material of construction. In 1878 Reading Hardware Co. introduced an improved version of cast iron apple peelers, called No. 78. It became very popular, and by the 1930s, when other peelers slowly disappeared from the market, it was the only peeler still produced and sold in North America. Lehman purchased the moulds for the peeler from the Reading Hardware and still produces No. 78 (now called Lehman's Best Apple Peeler). Each peeler is hand-made. - Area Notes
