Designed at Nortel optical lab at 3500 Carling Ave., Ottawa, this was an early prototype produced at Nortel's Paignton, UK facility in 2000. Production continued after Bookham Technology's purchase of Nortel's optical components division. including the Paignton facility in 2002. In 2005 it was still in production and was used for long haul and short haul applications.

A device used to provide and modulate a laser light source for a fibre optic network.
Technical
This is a 10 Gbps transmitter designed for use in fibre optic networks built to the OC192 network standard for time division multiplexing (TDM). It's effective range is 40-80 km. Referred to as an EA modulator, the NWT110AC uses an electrical voltage to change the light absorption spectrum of an indium phosphate (InP) modulator placed in front of the laser. This change in light absorption can be used to pass or block the light beam from the laser, effectively turning the light source on or off.
