Manufactured by Pioneer, a Japanese/American company specializing in domestic audio and video products, this home entertainment device was purchased by the donor with the intention of enhancing his home entertainment system. The donor purchased this disk player at Smily’s T.V. & Stereo Ltd. in Ottawa, in August of 1991. Its retail value was $728.00, at the time of purchase. In 1992, the donor had to have the disk player repaired, under warranty, due to a faulty motor. He used this device as part of his home entertainment system for approximately 8 years.

Function

An electronic device used for playing audio CDs, and videos recorded onto LD and CDV formats.The information embedded on the disks is read by the laserdisc player and is then displayed on a television screen.

Technical

Videos on LaserDisc were first introduced to the retail market in 1978. Being the antecedent of DVD technology, the LD became obsolete in the mid 1990’s. Unlike CD's and DVD's, which are digital, the laser disk is an analog system. The video data is recorded as a series of ‘pits’ on the reflective layer of the disk (usually made of aluminum). An average LD video has approximately 30 billion pits. These pits are read by a laser as the disk spins at up to 1,800 rpm. Each side of the disk can hold approximately one hour of video.
