Taken from curatorial worksheet: "Used in Fernande Rochon’s Crystallography laboratory at the Chemistry Department at UQAM. These items are excellent examples of technologies used in Canadian chemistry that pre-date the use of computer graphics for visualizing chemical models and crystals."
Function
Used in the making of wooden or plastic chemical models for researching and/or teaching.
Technical
Taken from curatorial worksheet: "Piercing machine: It was used with a little program (on punch-cards) which calculated the angles to be pierced in wood balls. It was used to make molecules whose structures had been determined by crystallographic machines. It could also be used to make models of unit cells or any other materials whose structure was known. It was purchased in 1970, but another one was used by Fernande Rochon at the University of Montreal in 1968. The wooden balls were linked by bronze rods, which were cut at appropriate lengths."
