Period
Ship was in service 1960-1991.
Canada
Modern industrial ship design and construction arose in Canada largely as a result of the extraordinary demands for tonnage during the 20th century's two World Wars. In the post-war period, maintaining and developing a capacity to build ships in Canada became a matter of national policy, supported by a series of government subsidies, initiatives and contracts, all offered in the face of increasing overseas competition. This capacity was persistently presented and understood as an important component of national sovereignty, both in terms of defense and in terms of access to and control over the nation's northern seaways - a matter that remains topical today. German and Milne's history, development, success and ultimately its end, mirrors this larger trend. As such, artifacts closely related to the company's operations and output are essential to preserving the story of industrial shipbuilding in Canada. CCGS John A Macdonald was a heavy icebreaker built originally for the Department of Transport as CGS (Canadian Government Ship) John A Macdonald in 1960 and then transferred to the newly formed Canadian Coast Guard in 1962 and renamed CCGS (Canadian Coast Guard Ship) John A Macdonald.
Function
To accurately represent the physical form and construction of an icebreaker in miniature. The ship itself was used to provide ice-breaking and other marine and transport services in the Canadian Arctic on behalf of the Canadian government. Also, to demonstrate Canadian presence in and sovereignty over the high arctic and its waterways.
Technical
The ship represented by the model is indicative of state-of-the-art, non-nuclear technology of its time. Moreover, ice-breaking and ice-capable ships were German and Milne's area of special expertise. The very positive service history and reputation of the ship serves as evidence of this quality of its design.
