Canada: The three cup anemometer was designed by Canadian meteorologist John Patterson of the Canadian Meteorological Service in the 1920's; successive versions of this Canadian anemometer have been used by the Canadian service since then. It was used as part of the Canadian Maps II automated observing station.
Function: A sensing device used to measure wind speed by means of a cup wheel, used at an automated meteorological observing station. The readings were transmitted to a connected data collection platform.
Technical: An example of the Meteorological Service of Canada cup wheel and sensor in use in the 1980s, intended to be mounted on a U-arm on a tower.
