Bags used to contain samples of grain developed by the Central Experimental Farm(C.E.F.). The C.E.F. was established in 1886 to further agriculture research and education so as to make Canadian agriculture more profitable, to increase food production, and to encourage families to stay on farms. These grain samples would have been either stored during the winter at the C.E.F. to be planted in green houses or outside in the Spring or shipped to farmers throughout Canada. Farmers planted the samples and reported back the C.E.F. on how the crop fared. The reports gave the C.E.F. information on how the grains they developed responded to different environments.
