Canada
Based on their markings, the two bottles were most likely made in Montreal’s Pointe St. Charles plant of the Dominion Glass Company, in March-April, between 1955 and 1975. Once filled with aspirin and milk of magnesia respectively, the larger and smaller bottles were issued by the Central Medical Stores of the Department of Veterans Affairs of Canada. The recipient presumably lived in Alberta as the bottles were recovered in an Edmonton office of the federal government.
Function
A medication used to treat constipation and indigestion.
Technical
This is a sample of medical packaging from the third quarter of the 20th century in Canada. Packaging had progressed from corked glass vials to bottles that were easier to open and re-seal, such as these two pill bottles featuring a metal screw top. This facilitated the longer-term storage and use of medication. If made by Dominion Glass, the bottles are a sample of the extensive and long-running manufacturing activity of this company in Canada (with four plants at the mid-century mark, in Montreal’s Pointe St. Charles, QC, in Hamilton and Wallaceburg, ON, and in Redcliff, AB). The contents of the bottle (aspirin and milk of magnesia) were everyday medical compounds that were commonly used in 20th-century Canada for relieving headaches and for alleviating constipation or indigestion, respectively.
