Sealing the milk bottle with a cardboard cap is a patent by Harvey and Samuel Barhart of Potsdam, New York, issued on September 17, 1889. The bottles were sealed to prevent the milk from being fraudulently contaminated or tampered with, as was the case in large cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
