This model was used and created by the Animal Research Institute, which operated at the Central Experimental Farm, in Ottawa. The Animal Research Institute probably used this model for extension work, meaning it was circulated to demonstrate to farmers how and what they could build to house poultry. The donor believes it could also have been a model for something the Experiemental Farm was considering built. That being said, it was never built. The donor was a research technician for the Centre for Food and Animal Research (CFAR) working on poultry genetics. He started in 1967. He found the model in Building 36, which had originally houses poultry work but had become a storage building, when the CFAR closed in April 1997. The donor noted that the two buildings beside 36, which were used as offices, had also originally been poulry related buildings. Furthermore, the donor believes his boss at the CFAR, Dr. Rob Gowe, may have been involved with this model.
Function
Used as a model to demonstrate and show to farmers how and what to build to house poultry.
Technical
This type of poultry building became obsolete in the early 1960s when poultry housing moved to what are essentially hanging cages, where cages are placed back to back and two rows high. In this new type of poultry houses, feces dropped below onto a conveyor belt or was manually removed. The older, open style of house represented by the model, which was used with other animals as well, saw the birds loose with roosts on the floor.
