This protractor was donated to the collection by an aircraft mechanic who worked for Spartan Air Services from 1952 to 1983. The donor found this protractor in his office upon his retirement. It was used at Spartan Air Services in the machine shop shop built specifically to service the company’s fleet of helicopters. Ce rapporteur biseauté est parvenu à la collection grâce à un mécanicien d'avion qui travaillait pour les Services de transport Aérien Spartan (Spartan Air Services) entre 1952 et 1983 respectivement. Le donateur a trouvé le rapporteur biseauté dans son bureau quand il a pris sa retraite. L'objet était utilisé à la compagnie ou le donateur travaillait à l’atelier d’usinage pour l’entretien de la flotte d’hélicoptères de Spartan Air Services.

Function

In aircraft maintenance, the tool is used as part of a bevel protractor to establish and test angles to close tolerances (ie: having two pieces that fit well together but between which a gap must be maintained, even when the pieces expand due to an increase in temperature). Technical

Bevel protractors have a long history of use in occupations requiring precision measurement, in particular, drafting and engineering. This instrument is used primarily for angular measurements. This metal instrument consists of a circular protractor housed within an irregularly shaped blade. An 11-1/2” or 5-1/2” trapezoidal blade slides into the housing. A screw on the protractor fixes that blade in place. The protractor is divided by single degrees and marked by tens from 0° to 90° to 0° to 90° to 0°. A Vernier (a smaller scale) is attached by another screw and permits angle readings to five minutes of accuracy. Une échelle à vernier est attachée avec une autre vis qui permet la lecture des angles à une précision de cinq minutes.

An object comprised of a flat piece of silver coloured metal that has both of its ends cut at an angle. This trapezoidal blade has single groove travels the length of its entire body and goes right down the middle. Un objet qui est fait avec de métal de couleur argent. L'objet est plat et à chacune de ces deux extrémités coupées à un angle. Cette lame en forme trapézoïdal a une rainure voyage tout au long de l'objet. La rainure passe au travers le milieu de l'artefact et voyage horizontalement.
