- War record - Polymer Rubber Corporation - Sarnia, Ont. For 100 years or more scientists have been dreaming of man-made rubber. Here at the publicly owned Polymer Corporation plant near Sarnia, Ont, the dream came true. Like the mosques and minarets of the Land of the Arabian Nights, butylene concentration towers, and butylene and butane storage tanks gleam in the afternoon sun. The all-steel tanks are covered with aluminum paint to reflect the sun's rays and thus keep down the pressure of the inflammable petroleum hydrocarbons within. From butylene comes butadiene, one of the two chief ingredients of buna-S rubber. Butane is a hydrocarbon which cannot be used in making rubber. It is piped back to the adjoining oil refinery, where it goes into gasoline.
