This deposit, more than 100 miles long and 400 feet wide is the largest in northern hemisphere. It is snow white and 98.5% pure, contains more potash, another vital war chemical, than any other salt mine in the world save Stassfurt, Germany. Photo shows the long wall cutter and driller at work. This is big time in salt mining operations. Here is an electric long-wall cutter biting into pure salt, cutting slab three feet thick - the garden like terraced effect is the way the long wall cutter finished the job. The electric drill is boring holes for dynamite sticks. Men work in a 50 degree angle here, 1200 feet underground and the temperature is always 58 degrees.
