- Every engineer has a fireman to share his run. The younger men who "fire" are really engineers in training. Ed Foster of Brockville has been with the Canadian National 7 years. Three years after starting firing he must write exams that will qualify him for his engineers' ticket. Then he must wait his turn for promotion to the throttle. Motive power varies and he might draw anything from a small hand fired steam locomotive to a sleek streamlined diesel electric engine.
