Canada: THESE LENSES WERE PURCHASED SPECIFICALLY FOR USE IN VIEWING THE 1905 SOLAR ECLIPSE: THE SOLAR TELESCOPE & CAMERAS WERE DESIGNED FOR THAT EVENT. THE ECLIPSE EXPEDITION MADE THEIR OBSERVATIONS IN LABRADOR.
Function: USED WITH COELOSTAT (660402) AND SOLAR CAMERA ATTACHMENT, TO VIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH THE SUN.
Technical: OBSERVING THE SUN WAS NOT A NEW PHENOMENA, BUT PHOTOGRAPHING IT WAS STILL A FAIRLY NEW TECHNOLOGY. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SET-UP IN WHICH THESE LENSES WERE USED CONTINUED TO OPERATE UNTIL 1919. THE LENSES THEMSELVES ARE 2 OR 3 ELEMENT ACHROMATIC LENSES, MFD BY THE BEST TELESCOPE MAKER IN BRITAIN OF THE PERIOD.
