Function: To transmit very short pulses of electrical energy at regular intervals and to receive back echoes of the transmitted pulse which are displayed on a display unit screen and which enable an operator to determine the distance, bearing, size and shape of all objects within its range.
Technical: THE VTS CENTRE USED RADAR & RADIO TO MONITOR AND CONTROL SHIPPING TRAFFIC IN MONTREAL HARBOUR 24 HOURS A DAY. IT WAS BASED ON STANDARD SHIPBOARD RADAR EQ., AUGMENTED BY STANDARD MICROWAVE TRANSMISSION LINKS AND A SIMPLE SUPERVISORY CONTROL UNIT DESIGNED BY DECCA RADAR CANADA. (REF.1)
