THIS TYPE OF TUBE WAS PART OF AN INSTRUMENT, A GEIGER COUNTER, FOR DETECTING IONIZING RADIATION. ELECTRIC-CURRENT PULSES ARE PRODUCED WHEN THE GAS IN THE TUBE IS IONIZED BY RADIATION. THE PULSES CAN BE AMPLIFIED AND MADE HEARABLE TO A "CLICKING" NOISE AND THUS COUNTED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT RADIOACTIVITY IS PRESENT. [REF 2] - Area Notes
