KARSH OPERATED FROM HIS PRINCIPLE STUDIO IN OTTAWA, PHOTOGRAPHING HEADS OF STATE, RELIGIOUSLEADERS, AND THOSE PROMINANT IN BUSINESS, THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT. HIS PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS & NEGATIVES, AND PERSONAL PAPERS ARE IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA.
Function: USED TO SOFTEN OR ACCENTUATE LINES WHICH APPEAR ON A PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE.
Technical: ACCORDING TO JERRY FIELDER, FORMER ASSISTANT TO YOUSUF KARSH, THESE RETOUCHING PENCILS WERE USED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY BY KARSH. SOFT PENCILS PRODUCE GREATER DENSITY: HARDER LEADS PRODUCE LIGHT SHADING, & ARE LESS VISIBLE, AS THE RETOUCHED AREA WILL NECESSARILY CONSIST OF A GREATER NUMBER OF FINE LINES, SUPERIMPOSED ON EACH OTHER.
