The revision and completion of maps by the direct plotting of topographical details from vertical and low oblique aerial photographs, is one of the tasks most frequently occurring for topographical purposes. Function

The most essential part of the apparatus is the double prism with a semi-silvered surface which, when viewed obliquely permits the photograph and the map to be observed simultaneously. The photograph for this purpose is fixed to an orientatable photoboard which, together with the prism housing, can be set at various heights above the map situated on the table. By tilting the photograph and altering the distance ratio between prism and photograph on the one side, and prism and map on the other side, it can be so arranged that the observer can so manipulate the superimposed image of the photograph on the map to match corresponding details, and thereby fix its position; the revision details are then traced directly onto the map. Technical

The horizontal arm carries the prism head. It can be moved in the guide-head in a horizontal direction and fixed in position by means of the clampscrew. By this movement one arranges the change in the distance between the prism-head and photocarrier so that the viewing scale of the aerial-photograph can be varied.
