MIKE is a Canadian mobile phone and push-to-talk network that was launched in 1996 and uses the proprietary iDEN platfrom from Motorola. The network, which was initially launched by Clearnet in the Windsor to Québec corridor, extended its coverage to western Canada in 1997. Telus Mobility acquired the MIKE network in its acquisition of Clearnet in 2000. As of January 2013, the MIKE national network served the most populated areas of British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. It also provided limited coverage in Saskatchewan (near the Alberta border), Winnipeg, Moncton, Halifax and St. John's.

Technical

Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) is a mobile telecommunications technology, developed by Motorola, which provides its users the benefits of a two-way radio and cellular telephone in one device that operates on low traffic radio frequency channels. This radiotelephone's most notable feature is its Push-To-Talk application that operates on the iDEN network. Unlike a duplex cellular circuit, push-to-talk is semi-duplex. Only the send or receive circuit is in use at one time. The user selects the send circuit by pushing a button, and selects receive by releasing the button.
