Période: Sample only. This type of cable used from 1899+.
Canada: This sample comes from the Adams Power House No. 1, which was the site of the first long distance electricity transmission from Niagara to Buffalo. It is one of the earliest examples of cables that were designed to carry high voltage. [Ref. 1]
Fonction: To carry electric current.
Technique: The cable was used to connect a generating unit (one of the last 5 units installed) and switches. The same cable was used to connect bus bars and switches. To prevent short-circuits, it was designed to carry high voltage, up to 10,000 volts. Tests showed that the cable was able to withstand up to 40,000 volts. The cable was patented by Habirshaw Co., insulated by the India Rubber and Gutta-Percha Insulating Company of New York, and made by Brown and Sharpe. The connection between the generating unit and switches and between bus bars and switches was designed by the Westinghouse Co. [Ref. 1]This cable used at Adams Power House at Niagara.
