Large sandwich board style sign was used in Terminal 1 at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Ont.. Over past 150 years Canada has witnessed several outbreaks of foot and mouth disease. To a great extent, the existence or lack of foot and mouth disease in Canadian livestock is more of a marketing impediment rather than a human health concern. Food products contaminated with foot and mouth disease cannot hurt humans but obviously travel after contact with contaminated products or areas can quickly spread the disease. Given that there was nor remedy but slaughter if the disease gained a foothold in Canada's sheep, pork and cattle populations it was decided to protect Canada's herds by means of a widespread information and "avoidance" campaign. This sign was one element of that campaign. (Ref. 1)

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CIFA) relied on staff vets and those at agricultural colleges for accurate research which could then be transmitted to farmers, those involved in processing and distribution, and to the public. (ref. 1)
