Technical

Motorola introduced "bag phones" in 1992, after similar models (Motorola 4500X, 4800X, and 5000X, and the Motorola Tough Talker) had proved successful in Europe and North America. These initial models featured a handset that was attached to a large and heavy metal case that contained the transceiver and battery pack. By reducing the size and weight of the transceiver and battery pack, and by introducing more fashionable leather bags, Motorola was able to make their product more marketable to the average cellular phone user. Motorola released five different variations of the Motorola 480. Motorola offered two Carry Phone models. This is an example of a standard version which was powered by the vehicle electrical system and did not come equipped with a battery. Its power connector, however, did have connectors for an optional battery and an external hands-free microphone. The deluxe version came equipped with a battery, an AC charger, and an integrated hands-free microphone contained in the connector assembly.
