During the early 1920s, the Peterborough Canoe Company in Ontario had served as the distributor for Johnson Outboards in Eastern Canada. On May 8th, 1928, Canadian Johnson Motor Company Limited established its own location in Peterborough, Ontario. In 1935 Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) bought the company. By the late 1950s, around 45% of Peterborough’s production was exported to New Zealand, Venezuela, Hong Kong, England, South Africa, Australia, Belgium, and Nassau. This was done by providing stable employment for over 1200 people at their facility. By 1959, it had expanded to over 400,000 square feet and provided employment to 1,600 people. The company changed its name to Outboard, Marine & Manufacturing Co. (OMMC) (a subsidiary of Gale Products Inc.) Canada before it was dissolved in 1982. Function
During World War 2, outboard motors served various purposes, including the construction of floating bridges in Europe. The Johnson PO15, a 22-horsepower row boat engine, was initially utilized by attaching it to one section of a floating dock. The process involved positioning the first section of the bridge upstream, with the engine set to match the current speed of 8 knots, effectively holding it steady against the riverbank. The section would then be secured to the ground while the outboard motor continued operating. The subsequent sections would be brought up and matched with the previous ones at 8 knots, each being pinned in place. In some instances, the Army would employ as many as 100 sections with 100 outboard motors running to facilitate the crossing of a river. This 1947 Johnson PO15 motor (aka POL15 or POL15 - Sea-Horse) was made for freshwater and has a horsepower of 22; this 2-cylindar model has a rope type starter and power steering. This motor weighs 115 pounds. The pistons have a displacement of 29.92 cubic inches; the bore width measures 2.75 inches, while the stroke length is 2.52 inches. This particular model features a rope starter for easy ignition and power steering for enhanced maneuverability. PO-15 models were made between 1941-50. Ce moteur hors-bord Johnson PO15 (souvent nommée le POL15 ou le POL15 Sea-Horse) était fabriqué en 1947 et a une Puissance de 22.0 et il est conçu pour l'eau douce. Le moteur pèse 115 livres et à deux cylindres. Ce modèle a un lanceur à cordes et une direction assistée.
