THE GRAPHOMETRE WAS FIRST DESCRIBED BY PHILIPPE DANFRIE IN 1597. IT DERVIED FROM THE ASTROLABE BUT INCORPORATES A SET OF FIXED SIGHTS & A COMPASS. IT WAS THE PRIMARY SURVEYING INSTRUMENT IN FRANCE IN THE 17TH C. & WAS STILL USED INTO THE 19TH C. BY THE MID 19TH C. THE TRANSIT & THEODOLITE LARGELY REPLACED IT IN NORMAL USE. - Area Notes
