EXAMPLE OF EARLY SCREW-TYPE SOCKET WITH SWITCH CONTROL. THREADED SOCKET ALLOWED LAMP BULB TO BE FIRMLY SEATED WITHOUT TWISTING OR EXERTING PRESSURE ON THE DELICATE FILAMENTS. PRIOR TO 1900 THERE WERE OVER A DOZEN DIFFERENT BULB BASES: BY THE TURN OF THE CENTURY 70% OF LAMP BASES (& SOCKETS) WERE OF THE EDISON SCREW-TYPE. - Area Notes
